Summer 2024

Happy summer THESA community! I hope you all had a wonderful end of your school year. The hard work you do in your classrooms is invaluable. I hope you recognize what a difference you make in our students’ lives and in our local and global communities. But that hard work can also be exhausting, so I hope you’ve patted yourself on the back for a year well done, reflected if you had the capacity to do so, and that now this newsletter finds you as you settle into some relaxation and rejuvenation!

When school is back in session, we hope you will register for our October THESA conference. It will have both in person and online attendance options. Our hosts, who are home economics teachers from Richmond, have been working hard to plan our October 2024 THESA conference with the theme “Reciprocity in Action”. There will be some fantastic pro-d opportunities to take advantage of. I hope to see you in Richmond (in person or online!) in October! Please get in touch if you and a group of your collegial pals would consider hosting our 2025 conference. We are actively searching for hosts.

If you’re keen to do some professional development this summer, I encourage you to check out some resources listed on THESA’s website that can support home economics educators in working toward decolonizing and indigenizing their practices. You can find those resources, that include podcasts, cookbooks, academic papers, and more here. We also have many other resources shared on our resources page.

Finally, if you have been inspired by one or more of your colleagues, there are ways to publicly celebrate and acknowledge them through THESA. THESA is excited to share that we will be awarding a “Home Economics Teacher of the Year” award, annually at our AGM, starting this October. Please read about the award here and consider nominating an inspiring colleague. Additionally, if you have a teacher you feel is deserving of a Pin of Recognition, please read about that awared here and nominate deserving candidates for October’s presentation at our AGM.

I wish you the best during the remainder of your summer break and as you step back into your classrooms in September.
