Spring 2024
Hello THESA community! How fortunate are we to be surrounded by flowers and sunny skies these days! I hope you’re able to take some time to enjoy all that spring has to offer us here in BC.
The THESA executive took advantage of this beautiful season as we met together for our working retreat at Harrison Hot Springs this April. After working on agenda topics, we were excited to take on some action items. We talked about how we might participate in an equity audit for THESA to create a more inclusive PSA and we broke into groups to continue working our goals around antiracism and decolonization in home economics and climate justice. We formed a subcommittee to work toward creating a THESA developed presentation that explores ways home economics can be woven through primary and intermediate levels. Outside of our meetings, we explored the Agassiz area as we zipped around, ate cheese, and smelled lavender on a self-led Circle Farm tour.
The online cooking session with Chef Trevor Connie was a huge success earlier this year and we hope you enjoyed attending. The executive has talked about trying to plan a virtual workshop every spring - so that is something to keep your eye out for and look forward to. It is always so nice to come together as colleagues and learn - online or in person! We funded this session as a way to “give back” to online participants at the 2023 conference since there were some bumps felt in their experience.
Speaking of professional development, plans are well underway for the 2024 THESA conference. A team of home economics educators are planning an exciting conference for you in Richmond this October and we will provide details as they become available. Please reach out if you or some colleagues are interested in hosting a conference in the future. We are looking for hosts for the 2025 conference!
I hope that you are able to keep energized as we head toward the end of this school year. If you need a little push to get through, remember THESA has lots out there to support you. You can apply for grants as a small group, connect to THESA members online, and seek out resources on our website if you need them.
