Spring 2022

Hi! How are you? I hope you are having a good spring. I’m getting a feeling of brightness from the budding blossoms and leaves in my neighbourhood. This newness of spring always seems to come at just the right time, for me, in the school year. Just like spring growth refreshes me, professional development that suits my practice also helps me feel revitalized and so, the theme of this spring newsletter’s president’s letter is pro-d :-)

A few weeks ago, THESA hosted a virtual Spring Floral Cake workshop with The Cake Mama Izabela De Paz. Thanks to so many of you for joining! We hope you had fun and learned a few things. If you have suggestions or ideas for other virtual “member benefit” sessions, like this one, please email me at psac47@bctc.ca and share your ideas!

Have you heard the news? The 2022 THESA Conference “Let’s Dig In!” will be offered in-person and online at La Salle College Vancouver on October 21 (please note that the virtual option will be limited)! THESA members Rachel Labossiere and Jocelyn Deck are hosting the conference in partnership with La Salle College and they are advertising it as the “most hands-on THESA conference to date“! They are accepting workshop proposals now. Find more information about this conference in this newsletter and at thesaconference.ca. Can’t wait to see you there! Please get in touch with me or another executive member if hosting is something you or your local chapter are considering for future conferences.

Are you looking for some professional development opportunities this spring or summer to help broaden your scope as an educator? UBC is offering home economics specific courses this summer including Agriculture in the Curriculum and Practical Foods (instructed by THESA’s former treasurer, Jennifer Johnson). These courses connect with the UBC Home Economics diploma (a great to way to access TQS category 5+!) and masters programs. I spotted a few other interesting looking summer institutes while looking through the UBC website including a 5 day online Anti-Racism Education institute; a one day, in person Sk’emel Iya’7yulh: The Paddle Journey; and an online Curriculum for Sustainability / Food and Environmental Sustainability course. And, of course, Kwantlen Polytechnic also offers some great, hands-on practical courses.

I wish you a feeling of revivement as we finish off yet another challenging and unique school year.
