1: INQUIRE & INVESTIGATE

THE STARTER PACK MEME

When was the last time you saw a starter pack meme? Are you familiar with the concept? This module will guide you in identifying a concept for a start pack meme based on your current experiences and designing this meme as a commentary on interpersonal relationships, living arrangements, social issues or family roles.

It is important to note that like any creation or form of human expression, there are often starter pack memes that are based on harmful (misogynist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, etc…) content. Your starter pack meme should focus on commentary on a lived experience and you are expected to exercise sound judgment with regards to the appropriateness of your content.

In the first section of this module, you will be investigating the various content, skills, and technologies required to develop your starter pack meme.

  1. Open the workbook for this week. On the document, you will see spaces for you to respond and show your work for this section. You are asked to provide information (including examples and sources) to address the following:

    1. What is a starter pack meme? What are some themes that people often use for these memes? What are some examples of tactful starter pack memes? What are some examples of inappropriate starter pack memes?

    2. What technology is required to design a starter pack meme? What options are there? What option will you choose? Consider - does a meme have to be digital? Could one draw, write, or sketch a meme?

    3. What research exists that examines memes as a way to convey human expression and experience? What are some of these arguments or points? Do you agree with these points? Why or why not?

  2. Assess your learning for this part by completing the single rubric at the end of the workbook.
