3: PLAN & CREATE

In this section you will delve into symbols from your own culture.

  1. Open the workbook for this week.

  2. Choose something from your family’s or household’s background (cultural, racial, religious, country of origin). Take a photo of the item, print, or symbol. (if a photo would not be appropriate or if you do not have a physical item to photograph, find an image online) and place it in the space provided.

  3. Describe what the item is and why it has meaning in your family or household. As you describe the item, think about what are some aspects of this item that could be problematic if it were used out of context? What are aspects that you believe should be celebrated and could be used in a design?

  4. Create a sketch (preferably in full colour) demonstrating how that item could be respectfully used as a source of inspiration in clothing or accessories. Your sketch may be done by hand or created digitally. You may choose to use the croquis provided in the workbook, use another one available, or create your own.

  5. Complete the single-point rubric found in the lesson materials.
