1: INQUIRE & INVESTIGATE
FOOD RECALLS
Before we begin this module, it is important to consider recent events and start thinking about the way we label food products as safe or unsafe. What food products do you or your household often purchase because you believe them to be safe for consumption? What food products are you often cautious about purchasing? What food products do you not purchase because you believe them to be unsafe?
ACTIVITY
Open the workbook for this section. In this section, you will be investigating the structures, authorities, and processes that determine if a food product will be recalled.
Respond to the following questions below in the workbook:
What are the names of the two agencies that are responsible for monitoring and advising Canada on food recalls?
What is a food recall? Explain in detail.
Review the list of recalled foods in Canada. Approximately how many food items were recalled in 2019? Does the amount surprise you - why or why not?
How many of the foods on the list have you consumed in the past year (or similar foods - as many are Brand names)? List as many examples you can find.
Complete the single-point rubric at the end of the workbook.
